We Need To Talk About Super Tuscans | #ItalianFWT Preview

Sometime in 2019, I got into a conversation on Twitter about Super Tuscans, red wine blends from Tuscany that are built with non-indigenous grapes.

These wines generally include some measure of Sangiovese, the iconic grape of the region, but they’ve earned their name because international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Cabernet Franc are included in the blend.

The concept came about in the early 1970s, when winemakers wanted to use these grapes though the rules of the region said otherwise. Much has changed since that era, and the conversation on Twitter politely questioned where Super Tuscans stand today with the local producers and global consumers.

And though we are mere wine writers, with no power to change the Super Tuscan climate, I decided that it’s time to widen the talk.
